Animal health: How to control bovine tuberculosis : Nature

Animal health: How to control bovine tuberculosis : Nature | Bovine TB, badgers and cattle | Scoop.it
A model of the transmission and spread of bovine tuberculosis in Britain suggests that controlling the epidemic will require large-scale cattle slaughter or a major rethink of combined control strategies.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Prof Robbie MacDonald's take on the Warwick University group's paper is an invaluable review of the scientific, sociological and policy implications of research that challenges the premiss that culling badgers can make a useful contribution to controlling bovine TB.

Vets' U-turn on shooting wild badgers

Vets' U-turn on shooting wild badgers | Bovine TB, badgers and cattle | Scoop.it
The two four-year pilot culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire should be completed by trapping the badgers in cages and then shooting them, says the BVA.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

This is not an elegant sight; the veterinary trade body back peddling furiously to save face and reputation.  Still a way to go before the BVA recognises that culling badgers is not a practicable or affordable contribution to controlling bovine TB.

Client relationship management is a tricky number.  Science can really get in the way.

The scientific case for badger culling - an organic farmer writes

The scientific case for badger culling - an organic farmer writes | Bovine TB, badgers and cattle | Scoop.it
Organic farmer Charles Mann, aroused by The Ecologist's anti-cull stance, makes an evidence-based case for culling badgers in areas of high TB incidence - together with other measures including enhanced testing in apparently 'low risk' areas that present a high risk of disease spread.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Charles Mann writes clearly about his views But he is selective in the phrases that he has chosen to substantiate his case and he has stripped out the caveats, particularly those attached to his quote from the April 2011 Sir Bob Watson meeting of experts.

"

  1. The RBCT provides the best scientific evidence available from which to predict the effects of a future culling policy. Informed expert opinion suggests that the more that a future culling policy deviates from the conditions of the RBCT - e.g. industry versus government led and/or culling methods (such as permitting controlled shooting of badgers in addition to cage-trapping), the more likely it is that the effects of that policy will differ, either positively or negatively, and with potential variability in outcome between areas.

  2. If culling is not conducted in a coordinated, sustained and simultaneous manner according to the minimum criteria, then this could result in a smaller benefit or even a detrimental effect on confirmed cattle bTB incidence.

Charles Mann has chaired the NFU in Gloucestershire.

Gordon McGlone's insight:

Despite assertions from farmers, vote hungry politicians and one biased vet, the badger cull pilots in Gloucestershire and Somerset have not been proven to have reduced bovine TB in cattle in the cull areas.  How odd then that there is pressure from farmers in Northern Ireland to fly against the consensus bagdger for a Test, Vaccinate, Remove policy and to roll out an Ulster version of a badger cull omnishambles.

I take the contrary view to DEFRA; it is very much in the public interest for the 'evidence' to be published.  But then again it might not be the sort of evidence that ministers want to be released.  Evidence that politicians have made unsubstantiated accusations and assertions would be a tad uncomfortable as May draws closer.

MPS have called on Defra to clarify its plans for the continuation of badger culling in Gloucestershire after the second year of the pilot cull failed reach its target for badgers removed.
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Gloucestershire's badger cull failed because it was not fit for purpose.  it did not significantly reduce badger numbers and there is no evidence that it has had any impact on bovine TB levels - good or bad.  There are more votes to be lost from a,badger cull policy than there are to be gained.  Politicians must  tread wisely - or is that a political oxymoron?

In the marginal seat of Stroud, cullers and ‘huggers’ are vying for supremacy
Gordon McGlone's insight:

Neil Carmichael won't be getting my vote.

I am unimpressed with Neil Carmichael's genuine commitment to environmental issues.  The government FERA labs, where world class field research is carried out into badgers and bovine TB, is less than 10 miles from Neil Carmichael's office, in his constituency. He has never visited those labs.

I live in Dursley; Neil Carmichael is my MP.  In the middle of his term, he ignored my letter offering him a detailed briefing on badgers and bovine TB vaccination.  As a constituent I expect my MP to work for me.  Ignoring letters on difficult subjects shows a contempt for the role of the MP.

Liz Truss Meeting : Update - Badger Trust | Bovine TB, badgers and cattle | Scoop.it

Trust has followed up its meeting with the Secretary of State Liz Truss with a letter stressing the increased  levels badger crime.

Gordon McGlone's insight:

The Badger Trust has followed up its meeting with the Secretary of State Liz Truss with a letter stressing the increased  levels badger crime.

"Badger Cull

Dear Secretary of State

STATEMENT ON BADGER PERSECUTION AND WILDLIFE CRIME

During our meeting on Tuesday, 3rd March to discuss the government’s badger cull policy, you gave us an undertaking that your department would issue a statement condemning the illegal killing and persecution of badgers. To date we have not seen such a statement and are therefore concerned to know the reason for the delay.

As you are aware all badgers and their setts are fully protected by the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. Anyone who takes, kills or injures a badger, or who interferes with a badger sett, can be sent to prison for six months and/ or be fined up to £5,000.

We are particularly concerned that the pilot badger culls have caused a huge increase in illegal killing, something DEFRA’s own Risk & Issues Logs (RILs) clearly predicted. The Badger Trust Incidents Report, which compiles annual records from our supporters, general public, police and the RSPCA has shown a 116% increase from 323 persecution incidents in 2012 to 697 in 2013.

These incidents not only show a worrying escalation in the number of farmers and landowners willing to illegally kill badgers but also in the cruel methods used, such as by gassing, shooting, poisoning and snaring. The apparent legitimising of these abhorrent activities by the implementation of the government’s cull needs to be addressed immediately.

These attacks have become a blight on our society and countryside, and we feel it very important that Government Ministers are seen to be leading the fight against wildlife crime, particularly the Secretary of State responsible for DEFRA. We shall put this letter in the public domain and look forward to seeing your response in the very near future."

Yours sincerely
